If you're just starting out with a website, there's a few basics that you'll need:

Host

This is where your files are stored and where your web address is located.

HTML Editor

This is where all the coding is done. Unless you know HTML and can hard code in Notepad, HTML editors are great for visually creating and editing your site.

Graphics Program

Microsoft Paint won't cut it if you're looking to design real graphics for your site. You'll need a good graphics program like PSP or Fireworks. If you don't know how to or don't want to create your own graphics, there's plenty of sites around that offer free graphics to download. Just be sure to read their terms of use. Usually they'll require a link back.

FTP Program

(File Transfer Protocol) Some website hosts allow/require that you upload your files to their server through FTP. With an FTP program, you can upload multiple files at one time, which saves you lots of time if you have lots of graphics and files on your site.

Patience

Creating websites doesn't come easily, especially when you're a beginner. It takes time and lots of patience to learn the basics, but in the end, you'll get the hang of it and be on your way to managing a beautiful site.

Hosts

There are plenty of sites out there that are willing to host your site for free. When looking for a host, here's some things to keep in mind: How much space are you getting? Do they place ads on your site? Can you upload your own files/graphics to their site? Are they reliable?

Tripod.com

Geocities.com

Angelfire.com

Topcities.com

Virtue.nu

Envy.nu

Looking for a real host without ads? Here's more links.

HTML Editors

There are a lot of visual HTML editors that make web site creation a whole lot easier. Below are the editors I recommend the most.

CuteHTML (30 day trial)

Cool Page (free)

Coffee Cup (trial)

Dreamweaver (30 day trial)

Arachnophilia (free)

AceHTML (free)

Graphics Program

Depending on the intensity and detail of the graphics you'd like to create, there's a large selection of programs for you to chose from. The freeware programs have less effects but can still create adequate graphics for your site. Paint Shop Pro and Fireworks are more professional programs that have the capability of creating awesome graphics.

Fireworks (trial)

Irfanview (free)

Image Mapper (trial)

Paint Shop Pro (trial)

Pixia (free)

iMaker (free)

FTP Program

If you have to upload your files to your site, you'll need a FTP program. Some are free, some are shareware. They all usually do the same job. I use SmartFTP and highly recommend that program.

Smart FTP (free)

Cute FTP (free trial)

FTP Commander (free)

Ace FTP (free)

Secure FTP (free)

RBrowser Mac OS X (free)
